Well, actually, we did! The kids here took us to lunch at Tuccetti’s, at 21st St. and Camelback. The 6 grandkids were there, too. It was very lovely, and we missed you and Jessica. Then, Jamie went to the ASU/UofA game with Ben Ely, and the womenfolk went to Abby’s baby shower, hosted by Jessi Ely Young &Sarah and Emily & a girl in the ward. There were about 25 there. She got nice gifts for the baby and people visited a long time. Diana and Geri and Eliza came, too! Eliza was so shocked to see Abby hugely pregnant. Neil & Diana went home, and the Craigs went to the Harry Potter movie, which the rest of us went to last night. Everyone liked it but me.

  2. Emily:

Abby, I meant to tell you….
I think it is important, nay, key, that Dumbledore said to Harry: No spell can undo death. I thought that was kind of a random thing to put in there, unless JKR told the screenwriter that it needed to be said. I.e., (spoiler alert) that Dumbledore will not be coming back to life.

Anyway, happy anniversary, parents. I love you!

  3. Abby:

Yes, yes, I understand that no spell can undo death, but doesn’t the whole point of Harry Potter existing illustrate that there are exceptions? i.e. Voldemort should have killed him as a baby? And furthermore, couldn’t Snape have directed the killing curse on Dumbledore somewhat half-heartedly, or saying it with no intention of really killing? A spell doesn’t work unless you want it to, I think. I would like to arrange a friendly wager that Dumbledore is still alive (like, I’ll buy you a HUGE bag of Tootsie Rolls (with ridges) if I’m wrong. Tell me you can resist that. Because I know you can’t.

  4. Ryan:

Jessica asks: “Are you going to jump in and mention the phoenix?” And so I am. It’s not an accident that both Dumbledore and HP are associated with the phoenix, the creature that dies and is reborn from its ashes. No spell necessary.

  5. Emily:

Ryan and Jessica! i can’t believe you are on the bandwagon of Still Alive! It would be a sell-out, for sure, if D is not dead. The phoenix is an interesting point, but how would the phoenix and all it represents keep D from being dead?

What about this: the theme that love is stronger than evil takes on a new twist when we find out that Dumbledore, who loves all his students, even Slytherins–yay, even Malfoy–prearranged with Snape to kill him so that Malfoy would not become a murderer. To save Malfoy.

Also, how about that scene in the movie when Dumbledore loses all control: “Harry!” (running toward him with arms reaching to shake the living daylights out of him) “Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?!?” I think D is cooler, wiser, more collected than that portrayal allowed.

Funny that we’re dissecting HP on a post originally about mom. She lo-o-o-o-ves Harry Potter!

  6. Emily:

This may be the first time in the history of the world that tootsie rolls were offered up as a wager meant to tempt and persuade. Mmmm, tootsie rolls. The candy that Sarah picked out of her candy bowl and threw away because no one in her house would partake.

  7. Jessica:

Yeah, we’re on that bandwagon. I think D. is dead but he’ll be reborn (as his adult self) — so JKR will sort of cheat her way around the no spell can undo death problem. Hary will say: but what about Sirius? What about Cedric? And D will give one of his mysterious, not quite fully explained explanations.

  8. Emily:

I know the mysterious D explanations of which you speak. J–will ou emil me your address? Thanks!

  9. Emily:

    That’s ‘you’ and ‘email.’

  10. Jessica:

hmmm. Emily: have you been getting any messages from me (or from Ryan) this week? I emailed our address to you on Tuesday and again yesterday but today I received a strange email saying that my emails to you (and to other hotmail accounts) are not going through! weird, huh?

  11. Emily:

No, I haven’t gotten it. That is very bizarre. I will get the address from my mom so you don’t have to post it here online.
